  • Cardi B Awarded $350K in Case Relating to Mixtape Cover

This ends a federal lawsuit relating to Cardi B’s debut mixtape after almost six years. The man who accused Cardi B of misusing a photo of his back tattoos on the rapper’s debut mixtape, “Gangsta Bitch, Vol. 1,” will have to pay her $350,000 and withdraw his notion for a new trial. According to Megann Cuniff’s newsletter , the deal follows U.S. District Judge Cormac Carney’s December ruling that Kevin Michael Brophy’s back tattoo played a small role on the rapper’s mixtape cover. A jury in California ruled against Brophy’s $5 million claims against Cardi, her company Washpoppin’ Co. and her former manager Klenord Raphael’s company KSR Group LLC. Cardi’s lawyers told jurors the changes transformed Brophy’s tattoo into another piece of art. Her lawyers said such transformation is protected by the first amendment. In October, the jury deliberated for an hour-and-a-half before siding with the “Bodak Yellow” rapper. Brophy’s lawyers asked for a reversal of the verdict and a ruling in their favor. Judge Carney’s subsequent ruling stated that the mixtape served as a “larger visual commentary on sexual politics.” When Judge Carney backed the jury’s verdict, Brophy’s legal team asked for a new trial, stating they weren’t able to fully present their case. Judge Carney had imposed a 30-minute limit on lawyer Barry Cappello during his cross-examination of Cardi B. This had followed a heated back and forth between the rapper and the lawyer. Rather than file an opposition to the motion, Cardi’s legal team reached the announced agreement with Brophy’s legal team. The stipulation, featured in Cuniff’s newsletter, partially read: “The parties now have reached an agreement avoiding the necessity of Defendant’s motion for attorney’s fees and application to tax costs and Plaintiff’s New TRial Motion, and that agreement includes the entry of the accompanying proposed Order withdrawing any claim by Defendants for attorney’s fees and costs to be awarded other than as set forth in the order, and waiving appeal rights.” The closing arguments stretched more than two hours past time as Judge Carney didn’t impose any limitations. This led to the verdict announced late into the afternoon and court getting out around the same time as the high school across the street. Journalists covering the entirety of the trial were pushed out by high school students trying to see the Bronx rapper. The verdict ends an almost six-year battle between the rapper and Brophy. The $350,000 will only cover some of Cardi’s attorneys fees, which includes paying money to an attorney whose health complication led to a delay in the case.

  • Tory Lanez’s Sentencing Date Set for Late Summer, Faces More Than 22 Years

The Canadian rapper’s sentencing date has been pushed back again after a few delays On Tuesday, a judge scheduled Tory Lanez’s sentencing hearing date for August 7 in relation to the shooting of Megan Thee Stallion, real name Megan Pete. This serves as the fourth time the sentencing date has been delayed for Tory Lanez, whose real name is Daystar Peterson. His lawyers asked once more to prepare as they were trying to get Los Angeles County Superior Court Judge David Herriford disqualified from the case. This is due to his handling of their motion for a new trial. They objected to the delay, but Herriford believes they need more time to prepare. Herriford wants Peterson’s lawyers, Matthew Barhoma and Jose Baez, to consider addressing the aggravating factors of bodily harm and use of a firearm, which prosecutors want factored into sentencing. Herriford, before sentencing, will determine if he will apply the aggravating factors. Deputy District Attorneys Alex Bott and Kathy Ta are calling for a sentence of 13 years. Bott isn’t sure if Megan will show up to the Aug. 7 hearing, but she will make a statement in some form. He told reporters that the sentencing date accommodates all the trials as Baez is in trial on another case and other scheduling conflicts occurred. Regarding the recommendation of 13 years, Bott said: “We think that considering the factors in aggravation, factors in mitigation, that this is the appropriate sentence based on his conduct. We’ve had lengthy discussions about it. So that’s how we got to the 13. We think mid-term is appropriate in this case.” Their 12-page recommendation cites Peterson’s “campaign of misinformation,” which humiliated and re-traumatized Pete. This was when they argued against probation as Peterson couldn’t be supervised. They also cited Peterson’s album, “Daystar,” which featured several songs about the shooting. Bott and Ta cited the incident Peterson had with August Alsina where he attacked Alsina. Peterson also falsely claimed that prosecutors falsified and suppressed evidence, which is also featured in the recommendation. Lastly, they cited Peterson’s three court violations, one being he violated Pete’s restraining order during Rolling Loud in Miami in July 2021. He had also posted the police DNA report along with disparaging comments about Pete. Peterson was convicted on all three charges relating to the shooting of Pete. He was convicted of assault with a firearm, possession of an unregistered firearm in a vehicle and negligent discharge of a firearm

  • SAG-AFTRA Announced Contract Negotiation Extension to the Displeasure of Union Members

The Union extends its negotiations after the authorization of a strike. The Screen Actors Guild-American Federation of Television and Radio Artists, known as SAG-AFTRA, extended its contract to July 12 with the Alliance of Motion Picture and Television Producers (AMPTP), in order to continue negotiations. The current contract was set to expire by midnight PT on Friday, June 30, after which union members were set to go on strike. Union members voted in early June to authorize a strike if the two sides couldn’t come to terms. Nearly 98% of the 65,000 members voted for the potential strike. SAG-AFTRA and AMPTP released a joint statement that announced 11:59 PM PT on July 12 as the new contract deadline. The joint statement partially read: “The parties will continue to negotiate under a mutually agreed upon media blackout. Neither organization will comment to the media about the negotiations during the extensions.” A SAG-AFTRA contract extension isn’t new as it happened in both 2014 and 2017. In July of both years, both sides were able to come to an agreement. The extension comes upon a movement within the guild as members urge for the SAG-AFTRA to stay strong and join the Writers Guild of America in their strike. 1,700 members signed a letter saying that they would rather strike and join the WGA on the picket lines than compromise on key issues. Many union members voiced their displeasure in the comment section of the Instagram post as well as the replies of the tweet. SAG-AFTRA President Fran Drescher, who signed the letter, and national executive director and chief negotiator Duncan Crabtree-Ireland posted a video in which they said the negotiations were productive and they remained optimistic about a deal. On Thursday, Drescher told Good Morning America that negotiations were making headway. The two guilds, along with the Director’s Guild of America, have shown solidarity for one another since WGA members started their strike in May. The solidarity didn’t last for too long as the DGA announced a historic tentative agreement with studios. This agreement will be presented to the DGA board on Tuesday for approval and then to the membership for ratification. The WGA appeared to see this coming as its negotiations committee released a letter cautioning that studios would pursue a “divide and conquer” strategy in order to put the three unions against one another. The actors’ guild hasn’t gone on strike since 1980, which lasted 95 days. The 1980 strike related to the terms for paid television and VHS tapes.

  • Jonah Hill’s Ex Releases Texts, Exposes His Alleged Emotional Abuse

The text messages show Hill writing out his “boundaries.” “Superbad” actor Jonah Hill is facing backlash for his alleged texts to his ex, Sarah Brady, a surfer based in California. Brady posted screenshots of the alleged texts to her Instagram story, claiming they were sent from Hill in 2021. In the texts, Hill asks Brady not to do certain things, like posting photos of herself in bathing suits, being friends with women “who are in unstable places,” or surfing with men. After a laundry list of what he expects from Brady, he follows up with: “If these things bring you to a place of happiness, I support it and there will be no hard feelings. These are my boundaries for romantic partnership.” In her Instagram story post, Brady points out the misuse of the word “boundaries.” She suggested that Hill would gaslight her in order to stay in control. One of the photos that Hill allegedly asked her to remove featured her in a two piece bathing suit. Interestingly enough, Hill slid into Brady’s DMs with a photo of her surfing in a bikini. He allegedly sent the hearts eyes emoji in reaction to the photo and claimed he wanted to see her. Back to the texts, Hill allegedly states: “…and modeling, which is the last profession I would be with as a partner.” Brady quips, “thot pics,” a reference to what Hill may have said. She later told Hill that he should have inquired more about her career before starting a romantic relationship with her, stating that it was a bit late at that point. Full Gallery of Alleged Text Messages: Hill has yet to respond to the allegations, though his lifestyle and clothing brand, Meaningful Existence, dropped a line of hats that say, “Complete Unrelenting Control.” A few Social media users see the move as distasteful. “He’s so weird and disgusting,” said one Twitter user. “Yikes, everyone went to the Colleen Balinger school of handling allegations I see…” another Twitter user quipped. This is a clear reference to the YouTuber’s apology video amidst her various controversies. Meaningful Existence, according to its website, appears to be a satiric quip at lifestyle and wellness gurus. “Meaningful Existence is the lifestyle and wellness COMMUNITY founded, run, and ruled by Prophet Ezekiel Profit. Based on the teachings of Profit, WE HAVE one simple goal: to spread joy throughout the universe by Monetizing Happiness,” the about us page reads. Hill has yet to make a statement of his own in response to Brady’s allegations. He welcomed a baby with his current girlfriend, Olivia Miller, in May. Though, the gender of the baby has not been revealed.

  • Body Cam Footage of Joseline Hernandez’s Arrest Released

The footage shows an intense arrest of The Puerto Rican Princess following her brawl with her "Joseline's Cabaret: Atlanta" co-star. Body cam footage shows Joseline Hernandez’s arrest after her brawl with “Joseline’s Cabaret: Atlanta” co-star Big Lex. The footage features the Puerto Rican Princess saying she doesn’t want any of the white officers touching her. She also threw a phone at her fiance, Robin Ingouma, professionally known as Ballistic Beats. Soon after, she swung at an officer and she was then taken to the ground and cuffed. During the ordeal, she’s heard calling the officers “f–king f–ts” and “white crackers.” “You f–king a– b–es. You gay n–s, you gay b–es,” the reality television star shouted from the ground. She was then carried out of the building by her hands and feet. Hernandez was later charged with battery, trespassing and resisting an officer with violence. According to records from the Broward Clerk of Courts, she agreed to enter a standard pretrial release program. As part of the program, Hernandez has to stay in Miami-Dade, Broward or Palm Beach counties. If she ever wants to leave the area, she must receive permission from the court and she cannot have any weapons. Also, she cannot contact Big Lex. Despite the chaos, the upcoming season for Hernandez’s show, “Joseline’s Cabaret: New York,” will premiere later this month on Zeus Network.

  • SAG-AFTRA Joins WGA in a Strike of Their Own

The actors’ guild goes on strike after contract expired past its second deadline. The Screen Actors Guild-American Federation of Television and Radio Artists (SAG-AFTRA), a union of 160,000 members, announced its decision for a strike during a press conference on Sunday. Negotiations with the Alliance of Motion Picture and Television Producers (AMPTP) fell through after the contract expired for the second time on July 12. Almost every television and film actor joined the 11,000 members of the Writers Guild of America who went on strike in May. Fran Drescher, president of SAG-AFTRA, delivered a passionate speech during the press conference during which she explains the importance of the strike as well as call out AMPTP for perceived greed and unwillingness to negotiate with the guild. “What happens here is important because what’s happening to us is happening across all fields of labor, by means of when employers make Wall Street and greed their priority and they forget about the essential contributors that make the machine run,” Drescher said. Drescher continues: “We are the victims here. We are being victimized by a very greedy entity. I am shocked by the way the people that we have been in business with are treating us. I cannot believe, quite frankly, how far apart we are on things. How they plead poverty, that they’re losing money left and right when giving hundreds of millions of dollars to their CEOs.” One of the major issues discussed throughout the negotiations was revenue generated by streaming shows. SAG-AFTRA demanded 2% of that revenue, which AMPTP didn’t want to accommodate. The union wanted increases to minimum rates – 11%, 4% and 4% over the course of three years. AMPTP was willing to offer only 5%, 4% and 3.5%. Another major issue is artificial intelligence. SAG-AFTRA doesn’t want to ban AI, but they want any use of a performer’s likeness to create a new performance is done with compensation and consent. AMPTP says they agreed to that, but SAG-AFTRA chief negotiator Duncan Crabtress-Ireland said “the devil is in the details.” “It is a very craftily put together proposal that a layperson looking at it might not see all the holes in it … There are huge gaps you can drive a Mack truck through.” The slate of films and television shows began to slow when the writers started their strike, but the actor’s strike has caused many films to go completely dark – even those with completed scripts. According to NBC News, these are some of the films that are confirmed to be halt due to the strike: Gladiator 2 (Paramount Pictures) Juror #2 (Warner Bros. Pictures) Mission: Impossible – Dead Reckoning Part Two (Paramount Pictures) Untitled F1 Drama (Apple TV+) The SAG-AFTRA joining the writers in a strike marks the first time that both writers and actors simultaneously went on strike in 63 years.

  • “The Challenge” Star Tori Deal Threatens Legal Action Following Co-Star Amanda Garcia’s Allegations

Following her own post ridiculing Garcia, Tori Deal claims to have contacted a lawyer following allegations stated by her co-star. “The Challenge” stars Amanda Garcia and Tori Deal reignite their beef ahead of the upcoming season of “The Challenge: USA” Deal recently posted to Instagram a series of photos with one featuring a cast photo for the fourth season of “The Challenge: All Star.” The photo included Johnny “Bananas” Devenanzio, Cory Wharton, Wes Bergmann, Jonna Mannion, and Amanda Garcia. Deal posted the photo with a clown emoji over Garcia’s face, sparking a series of angry tweets from Garcia. Garcia’s first tweet read: “Sorry guys, I just got off work. I didn’t realize that roided out monster was such a fan…thanks for highlighting ME in your post loser” In her many tweets, Garcia alleges that Deal had some form of plastic surgery, taking steroids and doing sexual favors in exchange for money. She specifically refers to Deal as “a steroid injecting prostitute.” After Garcia unleashed her series of tweets, Deal posts to her Instagram story that she’ll contact a lawyer. In another Instagram story post, she notes that it’s crossing a line to make up lies about someone doing illegal things. The duo has had their share of beef in the past, which came to a head during the reunion for “The Challenge: Spies, Lies, Allies” when Garcia was asked why she didn’t like Deal. “I‘ve just never f–ked with her,” Garcia explained. “She’s always kind of been a chameleon. Every season, she spends [time] with different people. She’s not friends with that person, she has a new boyfriend. People can’t keep up with her, and I don’t like someone who’s not consistently the same person every season.” Deal argued that people grow and change, though Garcia quips that she hasn’t seen growth within Deal. Host Maria Menuonos asked Garcia if the problem is resolvable and Garcia said she doesn’t. Deal felt the opposite as she would accept an apology if it were to ever come her way. Garcia feels that would lead to a fake friendship as she felt the two don’t have anything in common. Amidst Garcia’s tweets, Theo Campbell, star track runner who competed on “The Challenge: War of the Worlds” and “The Challenge: War of the Worlds 2,” chimed in with a tweet of his own. “You’re the reason production has this new two-hour sit down meeting about social media and safeguarding then,” the tweet read . Deal ultimately deleted the photo from the post that started the entire situation.

  • Kevin Spacey Found Not Guilty of Sexual Assault Charges

The actor cleared on all nine charges with much help from Elton John and husband David Furnish’s Testimonies. Kevin Spacey was found not guilty during his sexual assault trial in the UK with much help from Elton John and his husband David Furnish. Spacey allegedly grabbed the crotches of three men and performed sexual acts on a man who was asleep in his home. The alleged incidents happened during a twelve-year period, from 2001 until 2013. One of the alleged victims said he drove Spacey to the White Tie & Tiara Ball in 2004 or 2005. During the drive, Spacey allegedly grabbed his crotch so forcefully that he almost ran off the road. The accuser told the jury that Spacey allegedly stroked his leg, rubbed his neck, sexually touched him over his clothes and smacked his butt many times, Furnish previously testified that Spacey did not attend the annual party at their Windsor home the year the accuser said he was attacked. Furnish supported Spacey's testimony that he attended the event only in 2001. Furnish said he reviewed photos taken at the party from the year 2001 until 2005. Spacey allegedly only appeared in the photos for the 2001 event. John said in his video testimony that Spacey attended the party in the early 200s and arrived after flying in on a private jet. Furnish said Spacey's appearance was a surprise as it was a big deal at the time. John said he only remembered Spacey coming once to the gala and said the actor spent the night at their house after the event. The alleged victim said he may have gotten the year wrong, but he notes that he wouldn't forget such an incident as it took his breath away. A second accuser claimed that once he denied Spacey’s alleged crotch grab and the actor had a “panicked” look following the denial. He alleged that Spacey kissed his neck twice before grabbing him and telling him to “be cool.” Another accuser alleged that Spacey grabbed his crotch “like a cobra” following a string of vile comments. The final accuser believed Spacey performed a sex act while he was asleep, bringing evidence before the court. The evidence was footage from a pre-recorded police interview. According to Deadline, the accuser said he wrote a letter to Spacey in 2008 for mentorship. The actor called him to invite him over for a drink with the duo meeting up at Spacey’s house later that day. The accuser later fell asleep and woke up hours later to his pants unbuttoned and unzipped. When he resisted and said, “no,” Spacey told him to leave and to never tell anyone about the incident. After more than 12 hours of deliberation, the jury found Spacey not guilty on all nine counts of sexual assault. The verdict comes almost six years after the allegations began to surface.
